Certainly soldiers wrote home asking for clothing, mainly shirts and sometimes overcoats, of which there was always a shortage. But generally, after the first year of the war all armies were well provided for. For example the 9 Mississippi Inf. Regt. received a new uniform in 1861. By early 1862 there were some shortages, but as the year progressed and the large clothing depots kicked into action, shortages became scarcer and the Regiment began to receive large amounts of fresh clothing. In 1863, the 9th Miss.was part of Hindman's Division (approx 6,000 strong). In the first 6 months of that year it received 8200 jackets, 11,000 trousers, 6,000 shoes, 10,000 shirts, 12,000 socks. In the last three months of the same year the following was issued... 8,000 jackets, 12,000 trousers, 6,500 shoes, 9,000 shirts, 21,000 socks. In 1864 the Army of Tennessee (average strength 65,000) was issued 170,000 jackets, 278,000 trousers, 252,000 shoes, 300,000 socks and sets of underwear. In 1864 the Central Confederate QM department issued the following clothing to its armies... 458,000 jackets, 695,000 trousers, 744,851 shoes, 1,000,000 shirts, socks and underwear.
The jackets received by the 9th comprised Columbus Depot types which were trimmed in blue wool on the collar and cuffs and later in the war Demopolis uniforms trimmed in blue jean.
Maybe your Grandfather wasn't too badly off for the bulk of the War.
