The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

More missing Camp Chase letters located

I've always wondered if more missing Camp Chase letters would ever be found. As time goes by people pass away and a collection of Civil War letters and envelopes were sold. In the collection were some of the missing Camp Chase letters originally taken by Lottie Moon Clark at Camp Chase in April 1862. The reason I'm posting this on the Mississippi board is because one of the letters were to a Mississippi family in Baldwyn, Mississippi but Baldwyn was not spelled the same way. Using the census of 1860 I was able to identify the family.

Since the collection is not mine I can't disclose the contents or photographs. Hopefully other missing Camp Chase letters will emerge in the future from other private collections. I can say that the envelope addressed to the soldiers family in Mississippi had a Confederate 5 cent stamp on it and the stamp was that of Jefferson Davis and green in color. This is the first time I've saw a Confederate stamp on an envelope sent from Camp Chase with the Chase missing letters. Also on the envelope was marked Baldwyn, Mississippi via Richmond, Virginia in care of Mrs. Clark.
