How fascinating. Dr Amzi Martin was indeed appointed Surgeon General of the Trans-Mississippi Department after his exchange and return to Shreveport. Probably one of the most skilled surgeons in the Confederacy Dr Martin saved the life of General Henry W Allen at the Battle of Baton Rouge in 1862. Allen later Governor of Louisiana. Interesting Dr Martin is buried in the cemetery where the Baton Rouge fight took place.
