It appears that the marker on Johnson's grave for the 1st Miss. Cav. Reserve was placed in error, unless it is for another family member with the same initials. There is only one card in the CMSR for E.J. Johnson of the 1st Miss. Cav. Reserve, that being the record of a muster roll for the period Apr. 23 to Jul. 17, 1864. It states that he enlisted on Apr. 23, 1864, and that his age was 17. According to the memorial page on FindAGrave, he was born in 1826, with a notation (verified) that the 1900 census stated that he was born in April 1830. Either way, he would have been in his 30s during the war.

The 1907 census of Confederate Veterans and Widows for Panola County lists a B.J. Johnson (could have heard it wrong?) who said that he served in Co. D, 38th Alabama Infantry, that he enlisted in 1862, and that his present age was 77 (consistent with the 1830 birth year). There is no record in the 38th Alabama for a B.J. Johnson.

In the records of the 38th Alabama, there is a CMSR for a man in Co. D named E.R. Johnson. He died of disease on June 24, 1862. However, filed with his record is a single card for Pvt. E.J. Johnson, Co. D, 38th Alabama. This has to be a separate man due to the fact that the card is the record of a Register of Payments on Descriptive Lists, and it shows the period of service as Mar. 1, 1863, to June 30, 1863, and indicates that the man was paid $44 on Aug. 31, 1863.
