Vicksburg Surrender Oak
Pipe Out of Historic Tree
It Was Carved From Trunk Under Branches of Which Lee Surrendered.

J.P. Morgan, 135 Grace Street, has a pipe made from a piece of wood taken from the live oak tree under which Gen. Robert E. Lee of the Confederate army surrendered to Gen. U.S. Grant of the Union army, at the end of the war between the states. The pipe was found by Mr. Morgan's father, the late William Morgan, at Mobile, Alabama, shortly after the war.

It was lost by some soldier, who with his own hand made and cleverly ornamented the pipe. On a silver plate on the pipe appear in engraved letters the words, "G.L. Darnell, Co. F. 11th., Ills., Inf., Surrender Oak, Vicksburg, Jul., 4, '63." Whether Darnell is the man who made and lost the pipe is not known. Mr. Morgan would like to know whether he is and if he is alive, the Wichita citizen would be glad to hear from him.

On the front of the bowl of the pipe is a gold plate made from a $10 gold piece and bearing an engraved picture of the tree under which the surrender was made at Appomattox, 50 years ago. On one side of the bowl is a silver plate bearing an engraved figure of a man and the name of Gen. U.S. Grant. A similar plate with a figure and the name of Gen. Pemberton adorns the other side of the bowl. The faces of the men resemble the generals whose names are shown.

The finder of the relic who was the grandfather of Sam P. Morgan, desk sergeant at police headquarters, was once offered $75 for the pipe, relatives say.

You would think that only 50 years after the end of the war such an obvious mistake would have never happened, but there it is as I came upon it.

I hope Mr. Martin doesn't mind that I cross posted this on the KS board.
