Dr. Yates is listed in the 1867 catalog for Indiana University as a class of 1850 alumni. He is shown as a physician residing in Utica, Mississippi. Evidently the university had not been notified of his death.

His older brother, R.G. Yates, started out as a private in Capt. Yates' company, was promoted to 1st Lieut. June 10, 1862, and then to Capt. Dec. 14, 1862. He was slightly wounded at Farmington, May 9, 1863. At Vicksburg he was severely wounded in the trenches, July 1, 1863. He was wounded again on Oct. 5, 1864, at Allatoona. He was surrendered at Citronelle, and paroled at Jackson, May 15, 1865. There is a very interesting letter in his file dated June 4, 1864, from "Camp Par. & Ex. Pris. Demopolis, Ala." In it he asked for 40 days leave. The reason given for the request was that his wife's brother, John F. Watson, "lately a refugee near this place, was recently shot and killed for some undue purpose while on a visit to his home in Hinds Cty, Miss." It seems that Yates' and Watson's business affairs were connected even before the war, and Watson was in control of their finances while Yates was in the army, and he needed to consult with his brother-in-law's executors to get things straightened out. John F. Watson can be found at FAG #34224844. R.G. Yates is at FAG #11040389.
