Re: William or perhaps Wm. Lewis
In Response To: William or perhaps Wm. Lewis ()

Hello Sam:

Private William J. LEWIS was enrolled at Camp Moore as a member of Captain Henry V. McCain's volunteer company from Winn Parish, Louisiana. This company became Co. K, 12th Louisiana Volunteers at Camp Moore.

The 12th Louisiana Infantry departed Camp Moore on 25 AUG 1861 and arrived at Union City, Tennessee on 28 AUG 1861. They were one of the first three Confederate regiments to enter Columbus, Kentucky on 4 SEP 1861. The 12th Louisiana did not got to Virginia.

William J. Lewis' Compiled Military Service Records show that he "was killed by the cars on August 25th" which was the day the regiment left Camp Moore. I have notes from other sources that give his place of death as Camp Moore and as Holly Springs.

Can you elaborate on the source of your information?
