I would believe the location was misstated and it should have read the common term, "Ship Island, Mississippi Sound"

This action took place not far from the entrance to Lake Pontchartrain where the USS Commodore was stationed.

On 31 July 1863 Acting Master F. M. Green was ordered to her command with instructions to patrol in Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana.
