Bowen Yerger, Co. D, 28th Mississippi Cavalry

Pvt. Grant Bowen Yerger, Co. D, 28th Mississippi Cavalry:

"Bowen, a youth of eighteen summers, with his erect bearing, black hair, and deep blue eyes, looked as dauntless as an Indian brave. But alas! On November 29, 1864, while in an engagement near Spring Hill, Tennessee, he was mortally wounded, just as his beloved Commander, Captain Will Hunt, gave the order to charge a piece of artillery, that was mowing his men down like grass before a scythe. Bowen fell from his horse, his lifeless form was borne from the field amidst a fusillade of shot and shell by his brave and chivalrous brother, William G. Yerger, late of this city, and placed under the sod at the foot of Mt. Carmel by their faithful servant, Henry Fisher. His body lies buried far from the graves of his fathers, but his soul has winged its flight to heaven.
