Jacob Shall Yerger voted against secession, yet signed the ordinance, & sent 4 sons to the Confederate Army, 3 to Co. K, 18th Mississippi Infantry, all later in the 28th Mississippi Cavalry, along will Grant Bowen Yerger who was killed near Nashville in 1864.

After the War, Judge J. Shall Yerger was Chairman of the State Constitutional Convention of 1865.
