Eddy: I cannot help you with the Confederate service, but here is a little on his service in the Missouri State Guard.

Virgil Cresap, age 24, and a resident of New Madrid County, MO, enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Division, Missouri State Guard, on 1 July, 1861, at Clarkton, MO. His captain was Luke M. Byrne, who was a state senator at the time of the war. The 1st Cavalry Regiment was commanded by Col. Andrew F. Jones, LTC Edward Alexander Lewis, and Major Columbus C. Kalfus. Cresap served until he was discharged from the regiment on 27 Dec 1861 at New Madrid, MO.

In the same company appears Joseph Cresap, age 21, who enlisted as a Pvt on 16 Sept 1861 at Camp Belmont, MO (across the Mississippi River from Columbus, KY). He likewise was from New Madrid County and was also discharged at New Madrid on 27 Dec 1861.

As you probably already know, the 1st Division was commanded by Brig. Gen. M. Jeff Thompson, the "Swamp Fox" of the Confederacy.

Hope this is of some interest to you.
