Sam,

I was involved with the identification of the 77 stones placed in 1998. Following my posting on the web of the list of men whose stones were to be dedicated, I received a note from a relative of James M Dean, 31st Tenn., Michael D. Smith, [MSmith31@compuserve.com] who stated that Dean died October 23, 1933 and was buried in Texas. I advised the Vicksburg SCV camp that we might forward his stone to Michael for burial in Texas. However, they decided not, and placed it in Soldier’s Rest.

Also, i noted that of those new stones we were placing, one had already had a VA stone placed sometime earlier. Then, in the very old section near the rear, under a grove of trees, was an old civilian stone for the same individual, thus, there are three stones for the same soldier. Unfortunately, I lost my notes and do not remember who that was.

A write up of my involvement appeared in the Vicksburg Post of July 12, 1998.
