According to a letter in his file, he distinguished himself at Donelson, which led to his appointment as Color Sergeant, after the company was exchanged, by Col. (later B.Gen.) W.E. Baldwin. That appointment was made either the 17th or 18th of October, 1862. On 18 Apr. 1864, he was appointed Ensign.
