Re: Last surviving Mississippi CS soldier?

Hello Jim, A great question and also one with a lot of definitions.

Are you defining a Confederate soldier that actually served in a Mississippi unit or one that was a Confederate soldier who lived in Mississippi and died there after the war?

Upon talking to the Mississippi Archives and History Department they informed me a book had been written in 1950 concerning the last living Confederate veterans of each state but MAHD seemed to think it was kind of iffy.

And pension records are not always accurate because of the fraudulent claims in some cases.

There is a site called the Mississippi Confederate Graves Registry but it would take a couple of days to look through all of the soldiers and their deaths. I went about half way through the A's and found a few soldiers who died in the 1930's but none beyond 1936. I thought I had found one named Julius Caesar Alford with the 39th Mississippi but upon looking at the United States applications for headstones 1925-1963 at ancestry this J.C. Alford turned out to be a Texas soldier.

Beauvoir said this: The last veteran to die at Beauvoir was Jim Walton of Winston County. He died on February 2, 1947, at the age of 96 or 97, and is buried in Beauvoir Cemetery. However, Walton was not the last veteran to live at Beauvoir. On August 30, 1949, James A. Thrasher of Smith County was admitted to the home at age 97. He left Beauvoir in 1951 at age 100 and died three months later.

However I can see no record of service for James Thrasher and a lady at Beauvior told me he had been with the 6th Virginia Cavalry but nothing found that I could see. I did see a James A. Thrasher from Smith County at Find A Grave Memorial# 122061131.

The lady said she is also checking into the Jim Walton for me and will call me later on about his unit.

My hunch is that the last surviving member of a Confederate veteran from Mississippi is going to be sometime during the decade of the 1940's.
