Private Henry Thomas Gillentine -- enlisted 3/31/63 Van Buren, MS; 3/19/65 wounded Bentonville, NC (only documented 43rd casualty for this intense battle); Gillentine says in his 1900/1924 pension applications that his “left leg [was shot] off above the knee” and “I had my leg shot off at Bentonville, NC, last battle of war”; surrendered NC at war’s end in Odd Fellow’s Lodge Hospital, Greensboro, as a member of the 43rd, as part of Lowery’s Brigade, Loring’s Division (occupation in 1900: farmer) (aged 17 at enlistment); from Dan McCaskill's MS CS Graves database: "Gillintine, Henry Thomas. Born: Apr 9, 1839 [actually 1845, according to family sources], Itawamba County, MS. Pvt; Co. H, 43rd MS Inf. Buried: Keys Cem., Dorsey, Itawamba Co., MS. Enlisted: Apr 15, 1862. Died: Sept 17, 1903 [1930, according to family sources], Dorsey, MS. Discharged: Mar 19, 1865. Lost leg. Confederate marker”; aged 17 at enlistment.

Most of Co. H of the 43rd MS was cut off from the rest of the regiment at the Siege of Vicksburg, became (along with a few men from a few other commands) Pound's Battalion MS Sharpshooters, was assigned to Ector's TX Brigade, and fought at the Battle of Chickamauga, actually taking part in the opening action of the battle near Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops. They were reunited with the rest of the 43rd in December 1863.
