General Nathan B. Forrest

I understand that from 1861 to 1864, General Forrest used the 1st. National Flag, the usual size 3 x5 and that his cavalry also used the thirteen state Battle flag. Shortly afterward, Forrest began using the twelve state pattern with the center star removed so the enemies would know he was on the field and that the end was near for them. I would like to know if he removed the center star or was a special flag made for him with the center star left out. Would appreciate it if anyone knows anything about this
and also, if the flag was captured and later given back to the South and if so, is it in a museum.
Thanks for any help on this.
