Bill:
The 43rd MS was only partially exchanged by the time of Sherman's Meridian Campaign.
A number of the exchanged men were mounted and sent to various points along Sooy Smith's US cavalry route to act as scouts and to actually engage the enemy, if the occasion arose.
Some of the mounted men actually served under NB Forrest in combat against Smith's forces.
One man of the 43rd MS was killed in action under Forrest during this action.
SCV Compatriot Scott Bell is putting the finishing touches on a complete history of the 43rd MS (aka "the Camel Regiment"), even as I write this.
The book will be published in the near future. -- Jim Huffman, co-historian, 43rd MS Infantry
