Of course its nothing more than a guess but being taken in Salisbury, North Carolina could have led the Union authorities to believe he was from a North Carolina unit. It was not unusual for some Tennessee troops being at Salisbury at this period of the war. After all it was April 12, 1865 when these prisoners were taken.
