The casualties at Donelson, deaths in training and the Northern POW camps (especially) took a very high toll on the regiment. When they were assembled at Grenada in the Summer of 1861, every man would be killed, wounded or captured in roughly 7 months.

After complete parole, the regiment was indeed reorganized, just as you wrote, in Louisiana to counter the approaching Yankees (headed for Vicksburg). This was where a lot of recruits (like my ancestors Drury and William) joined.

Layton had chronic health problems and resigned in '63 to command state forces. Adair was one of the few original officers to survive the entire war as a member of the original 4th.

It is exciting to hear of interest in the 4th.
