I believe that in this instance your source may be off the mark. Referring to his CMSR, I find this card in the file: Samuel J Hodges, Sgt., Co. E., 3rd Batt Miss Inf. Name appears as a signature to an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, subscribed and sworn to at Camp Chase, Ohio, June 11, 1865.
Place of residence: Amite Co. Miss.
Complexion Fair; hair DK
Eyes blue; height 6 ft. ___ in.
Age 34 years.
Where captured Franklin Tenn
When captured Dec. 17, 1864
Based on the above, I believe the S W Hodges listed on the Mississippi Confederate Grave Registry is incorrectly listed as Sgt. Co E, 3rd Bttn MS Inf. I feel that the more likely candidate for the registry is this man:
