Federal POW's released during Siege of VB?

Dear Board Members:

Just had a question posed to me that I had honestly never thought of before, nor have I heard/read of the supposed action in all of my readings/discussions over the Siege of Vicksburg.

My 43rd MS co-historian, Hon. Compatriot Scott Bell, of Jacksonville, TX, asked me whether I had heard of Pemberton's releasing Federal POW's in his hands inside Vicksburg during the siege, supposedly because he could not adequately feed them.

I can't recall ever hearing about this happening, and my inclinations are to doubt it.

Any of you fellows/ladies every heard of Pemberton's releasing Yankee POW's while the Siege of Vicksburg was going on?

Thanks! -- Jim Huffman, Adj., Gaineville Vols, SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, MS
