2-1/2 miles east would put it near the current junction of Midway Road and Hwy 18, which seems a little off (because there don't appear to be any springs at that spot). Another mile or so up the road, there appear to be several spring-fed ponds, just before you reach Wells Road.

Maybe that's the location, and the distance was just off in the O.R.? Or maybe they were measuring the distance away from their last stand at Snake Creek before retreating?
