Essentially part of a working party laboring in the trenches, making roads, foraging, improving the grounds about a post or camp. They were generally entitled to additional pay of 25 cents a day when employed as laborers and teamsters and 40 cents a day when employed as mechanics.

However, his records do not contain pay vouchers detailing such additional pay. This however is not unusual as recovery of Confederate records was no where near complete.
