Lieutenant General John Clifford Pemberton was from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and born in 1814 to John Pemberton and Rebecca Clifford Pemberton. The famous Vicksburg defender also had a younger brother named Andrew J. Pemberton who was a Captain in the Union. His job during the summer of 1863 was to recruit former Confederates for the 3rd Maryland Cavalry held at Fort Delaware into companies D,E.F, and G. Some of these Confederates had been taken as prisoners at Big Black, Mississippi. Captain Andrew J. Pemberton had a lot of success.
