Re: Lt. Robert R. Russell gravesite

Hal:

I didn't find a service record for him in the 3rd Battn. MO Cav., just a listing of officers for same, which shows that he was 2nd Lt., Co. B (aka Co. F and aka Co. G), 3rd Battn. MO Cav. (aka "6th and 5th Battn. MO Cav.").

This listing says that he resigned his commission on March 1, 1863.

However, searching miscellaneous CS records, I find 1st Lt. R.R. Russell, Co. B, 8th MO Cavalry, requesting a leave of absence of 30 days on or about Aug. 2, 1864, from a Camp whose name is illegible. A regimental surgeon verifies that Russell is suffering from diarrhea.

Checking the officers' listing for the 8th MO Cav., I do find 1st Lt. Robert R. Russell. This company is listed as having formerly been part of Jeffers' Battn. MO Cav. (A further notation says that the 8th MO Cav. was also known as Jeffers' Regt. MO Cav.)

A further notation says that Cos. A & B were eventually consolidated and paroled as Co. A, 8th MO Cav.

This regiment (Jeffers') seems to have been formed on or about Dec. 11, 1862, at Pochantas, Arkansas.

Moving down to Robert R. Russell's record with the 8th MO Cav., it turns out that this Robert R. Russell was only 20 years old when he enlisted, so he's not your guy, unless his age at enlistment is incorrect.

This R.R. Russell served with the 8th MO Cav. until he was captured at Madison Co., MO, on Oct. 19, 1864.

He was sent to POW Camp at Johnson's Island, Sandusky, Ohio.

However, a POW roll dated Nov. 12, 1864, St. Louis, MO, indicates that Russell escaped enroute to Sandusky. A notation at the bottom of this record indicates "entry cancelled," meaning (I guess) that he didn't actually escape. However, a War Dept. letter to a relative in the 20th Century indicates that no further records of Russell as a POW have been found, indicating that, perhaps, he did, in fact, escape the Yankees. (One can only hope!)

A pay voucher for Russell for the 8th MO Cavalry for the last quarter of 1862 would also indicate that this R.R. Russell (8th MO Cav.) is NOT the R.R. Russell of the 3rd Battn. MO Cav.

All of which means that I have essentially failed to provide you with any useful, additional info, for which, I greatly apologize! -- Jim Huffman, Gainesville Vols, SCV Camp 373, Pearl River County, MS
