Since the Tennessee River was largely under Federal control, Hood had few choices for a safe crossing. In mid-November his army marched north on pontoon bridges at Florence AL, and returned to that point in late December in some disorder. Navigation to the east was obstructed at Muscle Shoals (near present-day Wilson Dam), but Confederate artillery that survived the debacle at Nashville had to fend off gunboats that attempted to take the pontoon bridge under fire.

Journal of the Army of Tennessee (see entries for Christmas 1864)

After going home on furlough, many of Hood's men opted to join mounted units under Forrest's command. The parole record for F M Box shows that he surrendered with "divers companies and regiments" under command of Lt Col R H Lindsay. For that reason we cannot place F M Box with Powers Regt immediately before the surrender.

One thing for certain.
F M Box signed his parole at Meridian MS, May 13, 1865. I see no evidence that F M Box was at Citronelle or Mobile AL at the end of the war.

Are there any 39th Mississippi records for F M Box? Service files found in the 39th Mississippi are confusing. F M Box has a file jacket, but all records are labeled J W (I W) Box.
