14th MS soldier turns Galvanized Yankee

Colonel William Oliver Collins was in charge of the 11th Ohio Cavalry also known as the 11th Cavalry and the Rocky Mountain Cavalry. Fort Collins, Colorado is named after him. His son Caspar Collins was also a member of the 11th Ohio Cavalry and was killed by Indians during the WBTS. Casper, Wyoming is named after him.

Dozens of former Camp Chase prisoners took the oath and reported for duty with the 11th Ohio Cavalry. The former Confederate prisoners were released in late May and early June of 1863 and sent to Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati where they waited for an attack by General Morgan that never came. In August they were sent West. One of the former Confederates was Private William T. Danby of Company E of the 14th Mississippi Infantry.

It is interesting that none of the former Confederates thus far have shown up on the roster of the 11th Ohio Cavalry however they were there as evidence of some of their Federal pension records. So far I see 26 such former Camp Chase prisoners with the 11th OVC. The former Confederates must have had their hands full because of the Sand Creek Massacre in Colorado. The Cheyenne were on the War Path as of late November 1864.

Private William T. Danby was captured on May 19, 1863 he arrived at Camp Chase on May 29, 1863. He took the oath on June 3, 1863 and joined the 11th OVC.
