Francis S. Tull, age 26, Captain, Capt. Francis S. Tull's L. Art'y Co. (Vicksburg Art'y), attached to 9th Regiment Mississippi Vols.*, joined for duty and enrolled April 10, 1861 at Vicksburg for one year, recorded on the July & August, 1861 muster roll as "resigned," resignation and discharge dated July 14, 1861 Head Quarters Troops C. S. A., near Pensacola, Fla., received final pay August 29, 1861 at Vicksburg for the period June 1 to July 14, 1861

* This company was successively designated as Captain Tull's Light Artillery Company, Mississippi Volunteers; Captain Edward's Light Artillery Company, Mississippi Volunteers; and Company I, 36th (Villepigue's) Georgia Regiment.

The 1st (also known as Larey's and as Villepigue's) Battalion Georgia Volunteers was organized with five companies, A to E by G. O. No. 19, Hdqrs. Troops, C. S. dated April 16, 1861. It was increased to a regiment in October, 1861, and known as the Georgia and Mississippi Regiment, but it was officially recognized by the A. & I. G. O. as the 36th Georgia Regiment. This designation was changed to the 1st Regiment Confederate Infantry by S. O. No. 25, A. & I. G. O., dated January 31, 1862.
