Re: Benjamin Elijah Nicholson Co.A,46th Mississipp

Elijah Nicholson, age 30, Private, Capt. Angus Taylor's Company (Gaines Invincibles), Mississippi Volunteers,* joined for duty at Waynsboro October 16, 1861, enlisted November 2, 1861 at Vicksburg by Lt. A. B. Hardcastle for 12 months, last shown present on the January & February, 1862 muster roll, no further records**

* This company was successively designated as Captain Taylor's Company, Mississippi Volunteers; Company A, 6th Battalion Mississippi Volunteers; and Company A, 46th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.

The 6th (Balfour's) Battalion Mississippi Infantry was organized about April, 1862. It was afterward increased to a regiment and its designation changed to the 46th Regiment Mississippi Infantry December 2, 1862.

** The next surviving bi-monthly report for Company A was for the period Man & June, 1862 where they were stationed at Vicksburg. He must have been dropped from the rolls for some indeterminate reason on the March & April, 1862 muster which is missing from the records. ld

Reading the Record of Events below, it would appear he was taken ill, and either died, or was discharged for disability.

46th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry

46th Infantry Regiment was organized during the fall of 1862 by adding four companies to the six-company 6th (Balfour's) Mississippi Infantry Battalion. In February, 1863, it totalled 407 effectives and served in S.D. Lee's and Baldwin's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. The unit participated in the long Vicksburg siege and was captured on July 4, 1863. After the exchange it was assigned to General Baldwin's, Tucker's, and Sears' Brigade. It fought in the Atlanta Campaign, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and shared in the defense of Mobile. The regiment had 1 wounded at Chickasaw Bayou and during the Atlanta operations, May 18 to September 5, reported 23 killed, 68 wounded, and 37 missing. It lost 1 killed, 13 wounded, and 16 missing at Allatoona and had many disabled at Franklin. Only a remnant surrendered in May, 1865. The field officers were Colonels William H. Clark and Claudius W. Sears, Lieutenant Colonel William K. Easterling, and Major Constantine Rea.
