Hi Greg-

Thanks much for your post, very very helpful. The scenarios you have posed, that either the regiment took another units flag and made their own, or the makers of the flag goofed and added incorrect honors, actually help us make important decisions regarding the conservation of the flag. I myself hold many of the ideas that a museum curator has regarding flag restoration in that I feel it is dishonest and sort of "cheating" to make heavy restorations to a textile of great historic importance. However, the shadows of the battle honors are there, plain and simple, and of course you have to address them. Knowing that the 37th did not participate in Baker's or Port Gibson, it makes it far easier to keep the integrity of the flag as it is, conserve it properly, and not feel the pressure to "highlight" honors that we feel very confident the regiment did not want us to see.

What we cannot argue with is that Ensign S.W. Jones of co. K was killed in action at Peachtree Creek, presumably bearing these colors and honoring his spirit and all of his fellow soldiers is what we're trying to accomplish.

Thanks again,
Brian
