I think the regimental capsule histories page I mentioned will give you a lot of the general info you're seeking, so do look there first. Let us know if you can't find a specific regiment, battery, etc., there.
Feel free to ask about specific individuals, too, giving as much of their name as you know. Where they were living in 1860 and their ages can also be invaluable.
By the way, most of the responders on these "history-sites.com" boards actually have nothing to do with the operation of the sites. They're just interested volunteers, like me, who enjoy helping people discover the good news about their patriotic Southern and Confederate forebears.
There was a time when I was ashamed of all things Southern. Then, I had a child and decided to do a family history, which required me to eventually read Southern historical sources. What an eyeopener that was!
Now, I love the South and my "Southron" forebears -- not blindly, but at least with all the facts in hand to make informed, rational evaluations of them and their times.
