Mike: The 43rd MS is my heart and soul (insofar as history is concerned). I have extracted this on your grandfather: "Private James S. Clayton -- enlisted 11/1/62; detached service guarding baggage 12/62-1/63; transferred to 12th Mississippi Cavalry 4/64." However, I don't find him in the 12th MS Cav. (I do find a G.W. Clayton, but he's not your man.) Wait! Just found him in the 10th MS Cavalry (so the 12th MS Cav. reference is just a clerical mistake.) Oh! I see! The 12th MS Cav. Battalion became the 10th MS Cav. Regiment! Whew! Even in the 10th MS's records he is listed as in the 12th MS Cav. Regt. (not battalion)! Man, these National Archives records are sometimes so convoluted! Looks like he served until war's end, so you can be very proud of this young Southern Patriot! (Cripes! He's with the 12th Regt. MS Cav. at war's end!) You can order J.S. Clayton's Compiled Military Service Records for both the 43rd MS Inf. and the 10th MS Cav. from the link at the top of this page. Hope this (confused pile of data) helps! -- Jim Huffman, 43rd MS Inf.
