Helen: The records says, basically, that, since he was in the hospital when the Confederates pulled back from Kentucky, he was captured. If he had not been captured, he would have been given a discharge from the army since he was overage (according to the Conscript Law then in effect, but which would later change to include older men). He was sent back from being a Federal POW to Vicksburg, MS, where he was presumably exchanged for a like Federal prisoner in Confederate hands. While his record does not state it, I would assume that he was finally given his (honorable) discharge at Vicksburg.
