Two wounded of 17th Mississippi

Two 17th Mississippi cases listed in The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion, vol. II, part 2 are Corporal A. J. Pulliam, Company F, age 29 when wounded at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He was captured, and Assistant Surgeon W. H. Gardner, USA, described his case - "shell injury of the right hand ... excision of the splintered bones by the saw and cutting pliers." Pulliam was sent to Hammond hospital, and on 5 December 1863 was transferred to Johnson's Island, which is odd since that was an officers' prison. Also, among the wounded in Barksdale's Brigade at Gettysburg only a few were felled by artillery fire. It may be that Pulliam was struck very early in the charge by the Union battery (E/RI?) posted near the Emmitsburg Road. The next case is that of Private Thomas Mull, Company G, age 19 when wounded on the same date and same battle as Pulliam. Mull received a "shot fracture of the carpal end of the left radius." Surgeon William A. Davis attended Mull, reporting that the "articular extremity of the bone was excised on the field."
