The 26th Reg. Connecticut Voulunteers who were at Port Hudson, Louisiana, departed for Cairo aboard the St. Maurice at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 1863. (approx. 500 men) On the 28th, near Vicksburg, a squall was responsible for lines breaking and caused the St. Maurice to collide with another boat.
