Re: Steamer St. Maurice - Vicksburg to Mobile
The 26th Reg. Connecticut Voulunteers who were at Port Hudson, Louisiana, departed for Cairo aboard the St. Maurice at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 1863. (approx. 500 men) On the 28th, near Vicksburg, a squall was responsible for lines breaking and caused the St. Maurice to collide with another boat. At midnight on the 29th the passengers disembarked from the St. Maurice and were taken aboard the steamer South Western while the St. Maurice returned to New Orleans for repairs. - Diary of James Lord, 26th CV
