William Hancock, Private, Company E, 31st/39th Tennessee Infantry, captured July 4, 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, paroled in hospital July 15, among the paroled sick and wounded prisoners shipped from Vicksburg July 24 to Mobile, Alabama via New Orleans, Louisiana, "died on Steamer Lancaster No. 4, July 26,** 63' and left at ??[New] Orleans for interment, buried in Cypress Grove Cemetery [at New Orleans, Orleans Parish LA]

** His name appeared on a Report of prisoners of war who have died at New Orleans, La., from July 24 to July 29, 1863

1. We now know the name of the vessel on which Sam was shipped, the Steamer Lancaster No. 4

2. Sam was not one of those buried in New Orleans during the period July 24-29, 1863 as no such note is found in his record. I would therefore believe he remained on board to their final destination.

Now: We need to find the manifest of the Lancaster, hopefully.
