Re: Steamer St. Maurice - Vicksburg to Mobile

Patricia & Chip - Thanks for all the info and discussion on this topic. I apologize in advance for the randomness of my comments below but you both posted some interesting thoughts.

Patricia - You asked about my research. I have been working on this project for nearly 4 years now. I started out wanting to find out anything I could about soldiers who shared my maiden name - Wigginton (any and all spellings). I know from my family's general genealogy research that 1) it is a fairly uncommon name and 2) it is felt by many, that the majority of Wiggintons (in the US) are related. I never dreamed I would find the number of men that I have (around 140), that it would cover so broad a territory (18 different states I believe, both sides of the war), and that it would include men with Indian units (CSA) and the USCT. I could go on and on but that's the short version. It has been utterly fascinating, not to mention addicting!

Back to this topic. As Chip commented, the St. Maurice left Vicksburg on July 30, 1863 and arrived at Fort Morgan on August 5th. Your comment about some of the other steamers making multiple trips certainly brings a twist to this. It does appear that this trip of the St. Maurice was later than the other steamers that you have information on so does that mean it made an earlier trip? (Who knows?)

The comment about men being kept together according to regiments may greatly simplify our searches and makes me want to focus primarily on the 43 GA which my soldier was with. I assume you both have seen the list of paroles from Vickburg which is on the Vicksburg NPS site. I have used this list to locate those soldiers which were parolled at the hospitals and thus may have ended up as passengers on one of the steamers. Patricia, using this list and targeting those from your ancestors unit may point you toward which steamer he may have been on. Also, I didn't see your ancestor on this list using your spelling but I suspect that he was listed there under the name McCormick (I believe). I'm sure you have run into the problem of creative spellings but keep that in mind. I have found some real creative spellings of Wigginton in my work.

Have either of you seen the microfilm of those who passed thru Ft. Morgan? That would certainly be interesting to see.

Chip - In looking thru records of the men that you listed from your regiment, I came upon another man whose record shows him to have been on the St. Maurice. He was Josephus P. Brunson from Co. K. He, like many of the others, were parolled at City Hospital. I am working thru the Vicksburg list for those regiments whose men were on the steamer to see how many others I can come up with. So far, this includes your regiment and the 41, 42, and 43 GA.

Well, I've rambled enough for now. I will keep you both posted on my progress and let you know what I find out. Please keep me posted as well. Good luck in your searches!!
Kerry
