George Martin has done considerable work compiling a list of men in the 43rd. What amazes me is the variety of places these wounded were taken to. Several of the ships you mentioned are new to me as well as the destinations. I'm excited to add these to places I can look for my Samuel and the men of the 43rd TN.
So far I've spent time making calls to Ft. Morgan, Pt. Clear, AL and Vicksburg Natl. Park. Everyone has been great! The knowledge base of individuals who are the gatekeepers of these places varies, but all have taught me much about the Civil War and the multitude of events surrounding the aftermath of the Battle for Vicksburg. At George's suggestion, I've searched nearly every graveyard in Mississippi and as I've done so, am amazed at the many "unknowns" buried in them from the battle. Pt. Clear alone is fascinating in that so many of those buried on the site of the Quarles Hospital remain unidentified. The list of wounded was lost in a kitchen fire in 1868. The library in Bay Minette had a copy that went missing in the 1960s.
I will continue the hunt. You've given me some new avenues to pursue. I'm beginning to realize the steamer transports avenue may be the place to dig even deeper. How did you go about identifying these boats and which ones carried which units of men? Did the men stay together with their units as it appears in your research? If that is the case, I need to find out which steamer transported men of the 43rd TN. Have you run across this unit in your work? Any assitance would be appreciated.
