Mizner really blew it in the Holly Springs campaign.
The information of the four regiments on the Grenada-Pontotoc road was incorrect and only served to confuse matters. The information came from one of Major General John A. Logan's scouts.
Mizner's slow response to ride his commond to Holly Springs got him on the bad side of Grant and on the 21st was ordered to turn his command over to Ben Grierson. He was restored to command on Christmas day but was unable to prevent Van Dorn from returning to Grenada. Ed Bearss does a great job of detailing the Mizner saga in "Decision in Mississippi".
