Thank you for responding quickly. I know that he has a consolidated service card which says he appears on a list of detached and unavailable men who were surrendered at the end of the war, but he has a continuious sequence of cards reflecting muster rolls up until his unit was in the battles near Atlanta in July 1864 and then they just stop, a bad sign. However, he was at times a musician on detached duty, so I wondered if he was with his regular unit. So many men of his regiment died there and later at Franklin, and I have read that it was hard for them to even keep up with the names of the dead. I wondered if he was on a list at the end of the war and they actually did not know what became of him. Do you have an opinion? Thank you very much.
