Re: William M. Johnson
In Response To: Re: William M. Johnson ()

I really do think that I have found William M. Johnson, listed as W. M. Johnson, in the 18th Alabama Infantry, and the reason I think this is the right one (maybe) is because Benjamin Gunnels Johnson (listed as B.G. Johnson), who was an older brother, enlisted in the 18th Alabama Infantry in Jefferson County, Alabama, on the same date and in the same place as W. M. Johnson, which was July 29, 1861, in Jonesboro, and they were both inducted by James Haughey. Benjamin had moved back to Jefferson County, AL before the Civil War, possibly in about 1853, because he married his sweetheart, Nancy May (or Mary) Howton, and when the whole Johnson family was still living in Jefferson Co., they were neighbors with the Howton's in the Hueytown area.

Now, the problem is proving that this W.M. Johnson of the 18th Infantry of Alabama was the same William M. Johnson, born in 1841 in Jefferson Co., AL, moved to Pontotoc Co., MS with his family by 1850, and who was still living at home with his mother and older brother, Jonathan H. (Or John H.) Johnson in 1860, and as I said before, they were living in the home of their sister, Susan and her husband, Pleasant G. McCraw (he served in the 31st Mississippi, but I didn't find William M. Johnson in that unit). The father, Randolph Johnson (my great, great grandfather) had passed away in 1857. You see, what I need to do now, is somehow find out what happened to this W.M. Johnson of the 18th - did he survive the war, did he go back to Mississippi or stay in Alabama - what? Also, did he marry while in Alabama or marry after he got back to Mississippi.

I appreciate all your help, believe me!
