Thank you, Mr. Martin for responding. Duncan and his family were living in Newton County, MS in 1860, so I don't see why he would have gone to North Carolina but the Thompson family did come from Cumberland County and he was 19 when the war began. And his grandmother's maiden name was Armstrong which could explain the "A", so this actually could be him.
