Re: Thomas E Foster, Calhoun Co.

John Fuller enlisted as a Private in Captain E. B. Cochran's Company, Duff's Battalion* September 5, 1863 at Greensboro by Maj. W. L. Duff for 3 years, his presence is not stated on the September 25, 1863 muster roll taken at Egypt, Miss.** [This is the one and only card in his file]

* This organization subsequently became Company D, 8th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry.

The 8th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry was organized September 10, 1863, as the 19th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry. It was increased to a regiment February 15, 1864, and known as Duff's Regiment Mississippi Cavalry until designated the 8th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry July 19, 1864

** The next surviving muster roll is that for the period January 1 to May 13, 1864. We need therefore assume he was dropped from the rolls for disability, discharge, death, capture, desertion, etc., sometime after July 19,1864 as is not mentioned on this latter muster roll
