I've read both the Campbell and the Mackey diary for information on the 48th Tennessee.

I didn't realize how much material I had gathered on all these returned prisoner regiments until I started sifting through it to locate this particular reference. There are still plenty of holes in their collective narrative.

I wish I had more specific information to address your question. I'm sure you have noticed that this event occurred just as the exchange notice was being received, and the exchanged regiments were boarding trains to join Van Dorn and Price as reinforcements.
