Major Gathercole, age 29, enlisted as a Private in Captain C. S. Cofly's Company Mississippi Volunteers* May 28, 1862 at Fayette, Mississippi, assigned as a Teamster June 10th, 1862 serving for much of his time as a Regimental Waggoner on the Ordnance train and Regimental Commissary, wounded May 6, 1864 on the Plank Road, battle of the Wilderness, sent to hospital, recorded thereafter as absent without leave through the end of the year, with no following company muster rolls we do not know if he returned to duty before wars end
