Confederate Widows Pension Application

Hello: I need some help if you are able . I am looking for a Great Grandfather named William H Smith who supposedly was from Alabama and fought for the Confederacy in the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Family history says he received a head wound there and had a steele plate in his head. He did have seizures also. He married my Great Grandmother on 3/1/1874 in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. He was a great deal older than her. We do not know any of his family history, or at least, if it was known, it is now lost to us. Don't know his Unit number or Officers or where he served for sure. I did find a copy of Gr Grandmother Elizabeth Smith's (his widow) pension application from the State of Mississippi, Jones County, dated 1874. It's on microfilm at MS Dept Archives, but unfortunately it is photocopied folded shut. I don't think she received a pension. I really just want to know who he was. We have suspected he may have had another family somewhere, but just don't know. He also had medical books and instruments and was supposedly "a doctor" in the confederacy. I have looked and looked to no avail. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Just so you know, I understand human nature and will forgive him anything. He died in Jones County MS near Ellisville about 1890-1894. No known grave site, No church records, Can't find inquest or County records. My grandparents were very poor. Thanks for considering my request. Carolyn G
