Elaine:

I want to mention to you that there was another Francois Greffoz who was born about 1814 in France and who lived in the city of New Orleans. Are you aware of him? This same Francois Greffoz appears on the 1860 census of Orleans Parish, Lousiana, and the 1860 census taker incorrectly spelled his last name "Crefos". This same Francois Greffoz also appears in the 1861 New Orleans City Directory and his last name is correctly spelled "Greffoz". This Francois Greffoz had a daughter, Laura, and the birth record of his daughter, Laura, is found in the birth records of New Orleans and his last name is correctly spelled "Greffoz" on this birth record. The birth record states that Laura was born February 4, 1857 in New Orleans and that her father was Francois Greffoz and that her mother was Babette Lehner.

The point I am trying to make:

This same Francois Greffoz who lived in New Orleans is probably the Confederate soldier who served in the 6th Regiment, European Brigade Militia during the Civil War. I came to this conclusion because the age of Francois Greffoz who lived in New Orleans is listed as 46 years on the 1860 census of Orleans Parish, and the age of Francois Greffoz who served in the 6th Regiment, European Brigade Militia is listed as 47 years on his military service record, which is an exact match of the age. Furthermore, the 6th Regiment, European Brigade Militia was organized in the city of New Orleans early in the year of 1862, and there is no evidence that your great grandfather was in New Orleans or in the United States at that time.

Now regarding your great grandfather, I could not find another military service record in the name of Francis or Francois Greffoz. I tried every spelling of the name Greffoz that I could think of, and could not find another soldier by that name. The only Francis or Francois Greffoz who has a military service record is the Confederate soldier who served in the 6th Regiment, European Brigade Militia, and I believe that this record belongs to the Francois Greffoz who appears on the 1860 census of New Orleans and does not belong to your great grandfather. If your great grandfather served in the war then I do not believe that his military service record survived the war, unless his name is grossly misspelled and we do not recognize it.

Who told you that your great grandfather served in the Civil War? Was the information handed down to you from your grandfather and father? If your great grandfather did indeed serve in the war then I do not believe his military service record survived the war. You may be able to confirm his military service through other records such as his obituary or his gravestone or newspapers. It would be helpful to know where your great grandfather was living during the years 1861-1865. If another researcher told you that your great grandfather served in the Civil War then you need to ask the researcher the source of the information.

Are you related to the Greffoz family of New Orleans? If so, is it possible that your family is confusing Francis Greffoz of New Orleans with Francis Greffoz of Vicksburg?

I could not find your great grandfather on the census records of 1850, 1860, or 1870. Do you know with certainty that your great grandfather was living in the United States during the Civil War? Do you know with certainty that he was living in Vicksburg during the years 1860-1865?

On the census of 1900 your great grandmother Annie Greffoz is a widow living in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas with her daughter, Ernestine. They are boarding in the household of Kate McCarty. In the census index her last name is incorrectly spelled "Guffay", but if you look closely at the original census you will see that her last name is spelled "Greffoz".

Annie stated on the census of 1900 that she had immigrated to the United States in the year 1845, and that she had been living in the United States for 55 years. Therefore, according to this census record, Annie was about 5 years old when she came to the United States, and was living in the United States during the Civil War.

However, you do not know when her husband, Francis Greffoz, came to the United States, and if he came to the United States before the Civil War, you do not know where he was living in the year 1861. The census of 1880 together with the birth information of his children indicates that your great grandfather was living in Vicksburg, Mississippi from about 1876-1880 but that is all, unless you have records to show otherwise that you have not mentioned.

All the records I have mentioned I have pasted below:
