His records are filed under the name Jones Brown.

Jones/James Brown, age 30, Private, Captain Z. Booth's Company K (Scotland Guards), 5th Mississippi Infantry, enlisted October 18 1861 at Enterprise, Mississippi by J. S. Lanier for one year, last shown on the June 1862 Regimental Return as absent with the remarks "From April 25 at Okalona H," no further records, the first card in his file is a handwritten document: "Brown, James, Co. K, 5, Miss. Inf Deceased"

M269: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Mississippi

[Comment, inasmuch as latter company muster rolls survived and he is not further listed, he had to have been dropped from the roster sometime before the end of the year 1862, my guess is that he died in a hospital at Okalona in 1862]

HEADQUARTERS,
FIFTH MISSISSIPPI REGIMENT,
May 5, 1864.

I have been connected with this office only since November
1863. Many of the records have been lost and the facts have been
gleaned from the best evidence that can be obtained. I refer you
to the statement of Lieutenant-Colonel Herring, who was present
at the informal election referred to in the above remarks.
JOHN WEIR,
Colonel,
Fifth Mississippi Regiment.

Stationed at Jonesborough, Georgia, July-August 1864.
Regiment
Station not stated, not dated.
The officers of this roster were commissioned by Governor
[John Jones] Pettus, the records of which were lost in evacuation
of Corinth on May 29, 1862.
JOHN WEIR,
Fifth Mississippi Regiment.

Stationed near Pensacola, Florida, October 18-December 31,
1861.
Stationed at Saltillo, June 1862.
No monthly return has ever been made out by this regiment.
It is impossible for us to arrive at anything like a correct return
[due to] the fact that not only regimental but all company records,
reports, books and papers, including orders from Headquarters,
were lost in the affair at Monterey, where the regiment was
forced to fall hastily back in the evacuation of Corinth. I would
state that the companies and the adjutant's office are entirely
without books or blanks on which to make out reports.
