I found a John Weems living in Copiah County 1880, whose age would be about 20-21 in 1860, however it appears this man may have lived in Alabama until about 1878 by comparing the birthplace and birthdate of his youngest child. This is the closet match I could find with the info you provided. There was a John W. Weems as a 1st Lt. in The Mississippi 1st Light Art. KIA 1863, but you stated this coukld not be your man. Can you provide ssome more names as clues?
