The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

William Clack Burford

I have a GG Grandfather, William Clack Burford ,that I have been trying to find out some information on. I have no clue if he was in the Civil War but I have been trying to do some online searching for him to see. So far I have had no luck. He lived in Northwest Mississippi his adult life and is buried there in a small family cemetery. All I know about his death is he died in Memphis Oct. 19, 1863. I had never given this date much thought until I started reading a book on N.B. Forrest. I quickly realized that Memphis was in much turmoil at this time and a lot of fighting was going on in and around Memphis. He would have been about 56 years old and that is probably to old to have been fighting in the war but it seems strange to me that he would have even been close to or in Memphis at this time unless he was fighting. I tried to look up some Mississippi records to search for his name but I can not find any online records. I guess it is possible that he could have even been fighting in a Tenn. unit. All this is probably just wishful thinking but if anyone has acess to Mississippi records could you look his name up for me? My last name was and still is miss spelled a lot as Buford instead Burford so both spellings might need to be checked.
